Both of us found today a bit of an anticlimax we were on such a buzz from the last couple of days of trails which were continuously changing and always keeping you wondering what would be round the next corner.
We got up early threw our sopping wet tents away and rode the quick trip to the jet boat pick up over the “bridge to nowhere” a proper bridge in the middle of nowhere. The jet boat ride was pretty bland but then again we didn’t want our bikes thrown into the water just yet, bikes were loaded on the back for the 40min trip down the river a seamless operation.
Once unloaded we went up to the jet boat base for breakfast - more blank faces when Chris asked for a vegetarian option. (I have been surprised how hard it is to eat vegetarian let alone vegan when away from the main town centres) We hung our gear up to dry along the fence and when we were finally ready to “shake a leg” we rode the 80kms to Whanganui riding past the camp ground and into town and a proper bed.
Some things of note so far:
- Chamois crème is good for nipple chafe
- A wasp that flys down your top and gets stuck is likely to sting you
- Any spot is now a chamois stop spot
- Oil your chain regularly it sounds much better
- So far Chris has lost: 2x bananas. A charging cord, a dirty rag, an apple and a tube of sunscreen
- Your arse is important look after it
- If there’s a chance to fill up with water take it
- It’s much easier to sleep in a tent on a flat site
- a walk can be good
Just to add, the Whanganui river is an amazing stretch of water it now has legal person hood and would be a great paddling trip or some where to explore some more. Whanganui River Adventures we’re excellent and the jet boat driver had been running the river since 1985 he new exactly where the bot needed to be
